Subject: In remembrance of Alessandro Veneziani

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the unexpected passing of
our colleague, mentor and friend, Professor Alessandro Veneziani, on
September 9, 2026.

Alessandro was internationally recognized for his important contributions to
applied mathematics and scientific computing, particularly the mathematical
and numerical modeling of cardiovascular systems. Since joining Emory
University in 2007, Alessandro built a distinctive interdisciplinary research
program bringing together mathematics, computation, engineering, and
medicine. His vision was to make quantitative and computational methods an
integral part of clinical medicine, particularly in the understanding, diagnosis,
and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Alessandro’s scholarly accomplishments were remarkable. He authored more
than 150 articles, delivered more than 100 invited presentations at
conferences, workshops, and universities around the world, and received
research support from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of
Health, Coulter Foundation, Georgia Research Alliance, and industry. He was
also a co-founder of two Emory-based start-ups and a co-inventor on
several patents related to the diagnosis and treatment of coronary disease.

Just as important was Alessandro’s extraordinary commitment to students
and young researchers. Over the course of his career, he mentored students
at every level, including 19 undergraduates, 41 master’s students, 22 Ph.D.
students, and 10 postdoctoral researchers, as well as high school students.
He gave generously of his time, energy, ideas, and enthusiasm and was
deeply invested in the success of those he mentored.

Alessandro was an outstanding scholar, an inspiring teacher and mentor, a
generous colleague, and a passionate advocate for the ability of
computational and applied mathematics to make a meaningful difference in
the world. His energy, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to his students,
colleagues, and collaborators touched an extraordinary number of people.

We have lost a remarkable colleague and a dear friend. We will miss
Alessandro more than words can express.

Subject: NLA explained: exposition library + associated prize (deadline 30 Nov)

We are launching NLA, explained, a public library of readable explanations of
proofs in the Open Problems in Numerical Linear Algebra collection, together
with an accompanying competition.
Website and submission details: https://nla-explained.com/
Problem collection (please continue to send in suggested additions):
https://github.com/ajt60gaibb/OpenProblemsInNLA

As AI makes proposed proofs easier to generate and more abundant*, the
challenge is increasingly one of explanation, scrutiny and shared understanding.
The website aims to recognize and give credit for this work, particularly by
students as they develop as mathematicians, and to foster a lasting community.
Submit a paper or a video of at most 10 minutes explaining a proof already in the
collection. You do not need to have contributed the proof yourself. The emphasis
is on mathematical accuracy and human understanding, rather than technical
sophistication. Context, applications and worked examples are welcome, as is AI
use. The library welcomes everyone, from hobbyists to tenured professors.

The associated competition has two strands: those of any age who have not
completed a first degree, and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers at
academic institutions. Winners receive a certificate and authorship of a carefully
edited, beautifully presented write-up of the selected explanations.

Current organizers: Matthew Colbrook (Cambridge), George Stepaniants (NYU),
Françoise Tisseur (Manchester), Alex Townsend (Cornell).

* For a sense of the explanatory work ahead: following the collection's
announcement, one AI account generated > 50 proposed solutions in roughly
three hours before processing.

University, August 16, 2027

For students considering a PhD and curious about research in
optimization, Lehigh ISE offers a Future Optimization Graduate
Student Workshop (GradOpt), a one-day workshop designed for
undergraduate and master’s students within 1–2 years of applying to
a PhD program. This event will introduce the students to the
exciting field of optimization and its impact across science,
engineering, finance, and AI. GradOpt is open to students from a
wide range of academic backgrounds including engineering,
mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics, and related
fields. Lehigh ISE will cover the travel and lodging expenses of a
selected cohort of motivated students.

Apply here to participate in GradOpt: https://forms.gle/
pNKT6nsrVx4ibdaCA
The first round of student selection will be done by November 1

Participants will engage directly with Lehigh ISE faculty, staff,
and current PhD students through presentations, panel discussions,
and informal mixers. They will gain valuable insights into research
opportunities, the PhD application process, funding options, and
life as a graduate student. The workshop also highlights career
pathways available to PhD optimization graduates both in academia
and industry.

As part of the new Lehigh ISE Optimization Science (LIOS) Program,

Subject: Funded PhD position: turbulence and wind loading, RPI, USA

A funded PhD position is open at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
(Civil and Environmental Engineering, Troy NY) on a new NSF project
advancing Partial Turbulence Simulation, a wind tunnel method for
testing building envelopes, exterior attachments and other small
building systems. These demand large, detailed models that break
kinematic similarity of the flow, so practice falls back on
simplified product tests. PTS reconciles the competing scaling
requirements by partitioning the turbulence spectrum. The project
validates the method and supplies guidance for applying it.

Experiments are at the University of Florida NHERI boundary layer
wind tunnel, combining surface-pressure and point-velocity
measurements with planar time-resolved stereo PIV. The facility is
highly automated and the UF team leads the campaign, so the
doctoral work is analysis led.

We seek a strong foundation in applied fluid mechanics and an
interest in turbulence and separated flow, with scientific
computing in Python or MATLAB applied to large time-resolved
datasets. Experimental and prior wind engineering experience are
valuable but not required.

The student is paid a stipend and does not pay tuition, equally for
international applicants. Co-advised by Prof. Chris Letchford.
Spring 2027 start preferred, Fall 2027 open to strong candidates.

Subject: Postdoctoral Position in Scientific Computing at Stockholm University

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to improve and
analyse time-stepping schemes for simulations of glacial ice dynamics. The
motivation is the need for more reliable predictions of how ice sheets and
glaciers respond to climate change. The project builds on a stabilization
method that allows much larger time-steps than previously possible. Thanks to
the stabilization, step length is now limited by accuracy rather than numerical
stability, but there is still little rigorous understanding of how accuracy
depends on time-step size, which varies substantially over the course of a
simulation. The project's aim is twofold: to deepen the theoretical
understanding of the stabilized scheme, and to translate this understanding
into a practical, adaptive algorithm that automatically selects the largest time-
step preserving the desired accuracy. The successful candidate will have the
opportunity to shape the research direction and contribute both
methodologically and computationally.
