Subject: New software: decoint - IEEE 1788.1-2017 Interval Arithmetic in Python

decoint is a new Python library built for IEEE 1788.1-2017
Interval Arithmetic, and is built on top of gmpy2.

The library calculates lower and upper bounds for functions,
and provides error tracking for state estimation, numerical
verification, and more.

Core implementation details:
- Parses string inputs to create accurately rounded MPFR
bounds to guarantee containment, preventing errors caused by
standard binary64 Python floats.
- Switches between gmpy2 rounding modes during operations
to enforce downwards and upwards rounding.
- Tracks IEEE 1788.1 decorations (com, dac, def, trv, ill)
alongside the bounds to track domain and continuity states.

Subject: New book, Numerical Mathematics, Vol. 1

In July of this year, the first English edition of my book „Numerical
Mathematics, Vol. 1“, was published by Walter deGruyter, Berlin/Boston (ISBN
978-3-11-914766-8). This is a revised and expanded version of the fifth
German edition.
It covers the entire field of numerical mathematics from classical techniques
such as the Gaussian algorithm and Newton’s method to modern algorithms
such as least-squares approximation using Householder and Givens
transformations and deflation techniques. The methods are described with
mathematical precision, implemented in MATLAB codes and demonstrated
using examples. The MATLAB codes are available for download on the
publisher’s website

) so that readers can carry out their own experiments with the numerical
methods.
Thanks to its didactic structure and the numerous illustrative examples and
exercises, this book is ideal for reading alongside lectures and as a basis for
successful self-study. At the same time, it can be used by mathematicians,
scientists and engineers as a profound reference work.

Subject: INdAM Workshop "Structure-preserving approximation of evolutive problems", Sep 2026

The INdAM Workshop "Structure-preserving approximation of evolutive
problems" will take place in Rome, Italy, on September 7-11, 2026.

The workshop will focus on the development, analysis, and application of
numerical methods for evolutive problems, with particular emphasis on
structure-preserving approaches. Topics include deterministic and stochastic
ODEs and PDEs, nonstandard time integration techniques, model order
reduction, connections with differential geometry, and scientific machine
learning.

Due to the limited capacity of the lecture room, no further in-person
participation can be accommodated. However, to make the workshop
accessible to the interested community, it will be possible to follow the talks

mathematical models or numerical methods in partial differential equations, in
connection with uncertainty or data science. Specific fields of interest include, but
are not limited to, stochastic partial differential equations, optimal transport,
gradient flows, uncertainty quantification, model order reduction, data
assimilation, optimal control, and their applications.

The successful applicant is expected to complement the faculty’s ongoing
research activities in the field of applied and computational PDEs. Current

and astrophysics, and uses a variety of approaches, such as stochastic processes,

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a PhD student for the project "A Mechanistic Perspective on
Mental Illness". The description is

"Depression is a heterogeneous disorder that affects nine percent of people
worldwide. The impact of depression on individuals cannot be overstated, as well
as the impact on their family and the wider society. Attempts have been made to
categorise depression into subtypes such as melancholic and atypical depression.
Whilst these subtypes exhibiting distinct hormonal and neural signatures, a
mechanistic understanding could potentially replace categorisation via symptoms
and lead to more tailored treatment approaches.

This project will aim to create models of a wider brain network and hormonal
system to model depression’s underlying mechanisms and treatment responses.
The data we have is cutting edge and includes time series hormonal data
collected with the U-Rhythm device with corresponding fMRI measurements, as
well as measurements from the CA2 region of the mouse hippocampus. The
mathematics employed will combine graph theory, eigenvalue analysis and neural
networks."

My group develops adaptive stochastic optimization methods with

possible applications in machine learning and healthcare.

Ideal candidates have a strong background in mathematics,
probability/statistics, and optimization; prior relevant
research experience is a plus. Positions are fully funded

The SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing (SISC) invites submissions for a
Special Section on “Quantum Computing: Numerical Algorithms and
Applications.”

The submission deadline is extended to August 31, 2026. The review process
of each submitted manuscript will start immediately after submission, and
accepted papers will be published online on a rolling basis.

The scope of the Special Section encompasses two focus areas:
1. Quantum Algorithms for Scientific Computing Applications including, for
instance, quantum algorithms for differential equations, linear and nonlinear
systems, eigenvalue problems, optimization, and machine learning.
2. Scientific Computing Methods for Quantum Computing Science including
tensor networks for quantum computing simulators, simulation of qubits and
quantum processors, and numerical optimal control methods for designing
quantum gates and pulse shapes.

Submissions to the Special Section should present algorithmic contributions in
the context of a full algorithmic stack that advances end-to-end quantum
applications instead of focusing on some core components of quantum
algorithms in isolation. The scope of the Special Section includes various
technologies of quantum computing including gate-based quantum computers,
quantum annealers, and hybrid quantum-classical approaches. Evaluation of
the proposed numerical algorithms in computational experiments, for example,
in simulation environments or on actual quantum hardware, is a mandatory part
of publications submitted to the Special Section, as well as comparison to best-
in-class alternatives.
