Subject: New Book, Introduction to Nonsmooth Analysis and Optimization
Introduction to Nonsmooth Analysis and Optimization by Christian Clason and
Tuomo Valkonen
Functions that are not differentiable in the classical sense have become a central
tool in modern mathematical models for imaging, inverse problems, machine
learning, and optimal control of differential equations. These models are
increasingly formulated in infinite-dimensional function spaces to be
independent of problem size and discretization quality. This book presents a
unified and rigorous introduction to the infinite-dimensional analysis and
algorithmic solution of nonsmooth optimization problems arising from the
above-mentioned models, from the necessary theoretical tools of nonsmooth
analysis to state-of-the-art algorithms and their convergence and stability
analysis.
Introduction to Nonsmooth Analysis and Optimization offers a thorough
examination of analysis and algorithms—first- and second-order methods—in
infinite dimensions, as well as a self-contained and accessible introduction to set-
valued and variational analysis for optimization problems (including novel
calculus results for relevant situations). It is accompanied by Julia code to
replicate the numerical results.

Subject: New Book, Mathematics and Climate, Second Edition
Mathematics and Climate, Second Edition by Hans G. Kaper and Hans Engler
Mathematics and Climate, Second Edition reflects progress made in the discipline
since the first edition—a winner of the Atmospheric Science Librarians
International Choice Award in 2013—published that year. The book emphasizes
conceptual models that capture critical components of Earth's climate system and
answers how and why certain phenomena occur. These models describe, among
others, energy balance and temperature distributions, ocean circulation patterns,
and ice caps and glaciation cycles. They are used to introduce methods from
applied mathematics, with a focus on dynamical systems, bifurcation and stability
theory, Fourier analysis, and statistics, including regression analysis and extreme
value theory.
Mathematics and Climate, Second Edition contains a layered atmosphere model
for the greenhouse effect, a new chapter on a model for glacial cycles, updated
sections on paleoclimate reconstruction, and exercises at the end of each chapter
to stimulate critical thinking and communication skills. Additionally, it provides
suggestions for further study and more advanced projects, an extensive list of
references, and a glossary of terms for the nontechnical reader.

Applications are invited for a full-time position as an Associate
Editor for Mathematical Reviews/MathSciNet to start in 2026 or 2027.
We are looking for applicants with expertise in applied analysis,
in particular with knowledge of numerical analysis (MSC 65).
Mathematical Reviews (MR) is a division of the American Mathematical
Society (AMS), located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, close to the campus
of the University of Michigan. MR has a staff of 72, including
17 PhD mathematicians. The editors are employees of the AMS;
they also enjoy certain privileges at the University of Michigan.
The successful applicant will have mathematical breadth with an
interest in current developments. The ability to write well in
English is essential. The applicant should normally have several
years of relevant academic or equivalent experience beyond the
Ph.D. Evidence of written scholarship in mathematics is expected.
Please submit a targeted cover letter, a CV, and 2 letters
of recommendation to: https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/list/28492
The review of the applications is ongoing. Inquiries may be sent to
the Executive Editor: Edward Dunne at egd@ams.org.
