We are pleased to announce the schedule of the upcoming Langtangen
Seminar on Scientific Computing at Simula Research Laboratory in Oslo,
Norway. Named in honour of Professor Hans Petter Langtangen, the seminar is
part of Simula's continued efforts to be at the forefront of scientific computing.
Through this seminar series, we aim to showcase internationally renowned
researchers who will not only present their latest, cutting-edge work, but also
share their personal insights on the future of the field.
The seminars will be online and viewable via zoom on Tuesdays at 15:00
(Central European Time) starting on April 1. Some presentations will become

Control and Machine Learning
Abstract: Systems control, or cybernetics-a term first coined by Ampère and
later popularized by Norbert Wiener-refers to the science of control and
communication in animals and machines. The pursuit of this field dates back to
antiquity, driven by the desire to create machines that autonomously perform
human tasks, thereby enhancing freedom and efficiency.
The objectives of control systems closely parallel those of modern Artificial
Intelligence (AI), illustrating both the profound unity within Mathematics and its
extraordinary capacity to describe natural phenomena and drive technological
innovation.
In this lecture, we will explore the connections between these mathematical
disciplines and their broader implications. We will also discuss our recent work
addressing two fundamental questions: Why does Machine Learning perform
so effectively? And how can data-driven insights be integrated into the
classical applied mathematics framework, particularly in the context of Partial
Differential Equations (PDE) and numerical methods? This effort is leading us to
a new emerging field of PDE+D(ata) in parallel to the development of new
Digital Twins technologies.

Subject: ICMS Workshop: Parallel-in-time algorithms for exascale applications in Edinburgh, July 2025
Exascale supercomputers are capable of 10^18 floating point operations
per second but making full use of this hardware for the solution of
partial differential equations requires a deep understanding of the
mathematical properties of the governing equations and how to
discretise them in a way that enables calculations to be performed
concurrently, that is in parallel.
Parallel-in-time algorithms, the topic of this workshop, enable
parallel computation in the time domain, in addition to more
traditional parallelism through spatial domain
decomposition. Time-parallelism is significantly more challenging than
spatial parallelism due to causality, since the state of the system at
future times must depend on that at past times. However, the advent of
the exascale era has inspired recent research in to these algorithms,
leading to an explosive increase in the number of different algorithms
available. The efficiency of these algorithms depends on tailoring the
algorithm to the equations being solved and this requires
interdisciplinary collaboration both with the application experts and
with mathematicians working in adjacent areas.
This workshop, taking place 7th-11th July 2025 at the ICMS in
Edinburgh, will bring together such an interdisciplinary group of
people to advance our understanding of these algorithms and open up
new areas of collaboration and research.
