Subject: Announcing the Langtangen Prize

The Langtangen Prize will be awarded to the best paper published
in a given calendar year on the foundations of numerical simulation
technology. The award is supported by the Ridgway Scott Foundation,
and the prize will be three thousand U.S. dollars per year.

The Langtangen Prize is named for Hans-Petter Langtangen (1962-2016).
Hans-Petter epitomized the goals of the Ridgway Scott Foundation.
His undergraduate training was in mathematics at the University of
Oslo with a specialization in Mechanics. He was one of the developers
of Diffpack. He joined the Department of Mathematics at the
University of Oslo in 1991, later moving to a professorship there
in Computer Science in 1999 and joining Simula Research Laboratory
at its foundation in 2001.s

Langtangen was a member of the European Academy of Sciences and the
Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. His research in the
foundations of numerical simulation always maintained close relevance
to important applications, especially in biomedicine and geoscience.
He was an ardent supporter of the FEniCS Project since its inception.
He was also a wonderful teacher, author, and beloved mentor to
several generations of scholars.

The Langtangen prize committee consists of
Ingeborg Gjerde (Norwegian Geotechnical Institute),
Matthew Knepley (University of Buffalo),
Patrick Farrell (University of Oxford),
Sara Pollock (University of Florida).

Nominations for the prize may be sent by e-mail to Ingeborg Gjerde
(chair of the committee) at {\tt ingeborg.gjerde@gmail.com}. Prizes
will be announced in the summer, starting in 2025. Nominations need
only list the name of the paper, the authors, and where published.
If the paper is not easily available online, a PDF copy would be
appreciated. Self-nominations are welcome.

Nominations are due by 1 April of each calendar year for papers
published in the previous year. arXiv papers will be considered as
well as journal publications.

The Ridgway Scott Foundation was formed in 2023 to support research
on the foundations of simulation technology at the intersection of
mathematics, models of the physical world, and computer science. The
Foundation presented its first prizes at the FEniCS24 meeting in Oslo.
The Foundation also posts prizes for solving fundamental problems on
its web site.

For further information about the Foundation, contact Ridgway Scott
at ridg@uchicago.edu.

Subject: New Book, Scalable algorithms for contact problems

Scalable algorithms for contact problems
by Z. Dostal, T. Kozubek, M. Sadowska, V. Vondrak.

This book presents a comprehensive treatment of recently developed scalable
algorithms for solving multibody contact problems of linear elasticity. The
brand-new feature of these algorithms is their theoretically supported
numerical scalability (i.e., asymptotically linear complexity) and parallel
scalability demonstrated in solving problems discretized by billions of
degrees of freedom. The theory covers solving multibody frictionless contact
problems, contact problems with possibly orthotropic Tresca friction, and
transient contact problems. In addition, it also covers BEM discretization,
treating jumping coefficients, floating bodies, mortar non-penetration
conditions, etc. This second edition includes updated content, including a
new chapter on hybrid domain decomposition methods for huge contact
problems. Furthermore, new sections describe the latest algorithm
improvements, e.g., the fast reconstruction of displacements, the adaptive
reorthogonalization of dual constraints, and an updated chapter on parallel
implementation. Several chapters are extended to give an independent
exposition of classical bounds on the spectrum of mass and dual stiffness
matrices, a benchmark for Coulomb orthotropic friction, details of
discretization, etc. The exposition is divided into four parts, the first of
which reviews auxiliary linear algebra, optimization, and analysis. The most
important algorithms and optimality results are presented in the third
chapter. The presentation includes continuous formulation, discretization,
domain decomposition, optimality results, and numerical experiments. The
final part contains extensions to contact shape optimization, plasticity,
and HPC implementation. Graduate students and researchers in mechanical
engineering, computational engineering, and applied mathematics will find
this book of great value and interest.

We look forward to seeing you in Birmingham in April 2025 for a terrific event and to celebrate together the successes of OR!
EDI
The IMA, the OR Society, and the conference committee strongly support diversity and inclusion. It is our intention to host a conference that is welcoming and inclusive for all, and we will be making active efforts to support the participation of individuals and groups who are under-represented at such academic events and in our discipline more broadly.
As part of improving understanding amongst the OR community of the different barriers individuals face, we would like to invite session leaders and individual speakers to include as part of their presentation(s) their own experiences of achievement, inclusion, and exclusion. This will be complemented with a number of focused sessions with key speakers on the particular challenges faced by different groups.
