Subject: Low-discrepancy Sequences
Dear friends:
Two weeks ago, I posted an inquiry about low-discrepancy sequence, and
got many helpful reply. Also, I have been asked to summarize my
search results on this Net. Currently, I am still in the process of
searching (free) C++ software (we do not have FORTRAN compiler). But I
am posting what I know so far.
First, I would like to thank everybody who replied and particularly
those friends who gave me direction where to search.
One of the websites is
www.netlib.org
Another website was suggested by Prof. Hickernell of HongKong Bapist
University, www.math.hkbu.edu.hk/qmc/software.html. There are FORTRAN
codes available.
The message posted in this issue of NA-Digest by Prof. Traub contains
an excellent source of information. Prof. Traub's group has developed
a software called FINDER (I am not sure about the programming
language) which can generate all three type of quasirandom sequences.
The website address is
www.cs.columbia.edu/~traub
The software is available to academic researchers (assumed free of
charge), but is not free for financial people. Based on the results in
the RISK article "Beating the Monte-Carlo", FINDER performs very well
over the pseudo-random MC.
Another source is perhaps the home pages of Profs. Mark Broadie and
Paul Glasserman of Columbia University.
However, I did not find the theoretical background material at above
mentioned sites. A good reference is "Uniform Random Numbers : Theory
and Practice" by S. Tezuka. Perhaps you need to go to a university
library to find it.
I have written a C++ program using Faure sequence and tested it on
Asian option pricing with dimension ranged 10 - 40. I did not observe
significant superiority of QMC over MC. My guess is that it is due to
either that the problem is too simple for QMC to show its advantage
or that FINDER's generalized Faure sequence is superior to my simple
Faure sequence algorithm (described in "Quasi-Monte Carlo methods in
Numerical Finance", by C. Joy, P. Boyle and K.S. Tan).
Merry Christmas every one.

Subject: Parallel Computing Classes at the San Diego Supercomputer Center
The National Partnership for Advanced Computational
Infrastructure (NPACI) will offer Parallel Computing classes at the
San Diego Supercomputer Center in January 20-22, 1999.
Detail information and web based registration forms
are available at http://www.npaci.edu/Training.
These classes provide an overview of parallel computing,
architecture of NPACI parallel machines, MPI function calls
and development of parallel application codes using MPI,
single PE optimization techniques on RISC machines, parallel
mathematical libraries such as ScaLAPACK and PETSc,
parallel debugging and performance monitoring tools.
These classes will teach how to develop grid based
and Monte Carlo parallel applications using MPI function calls.
Attendees are provided accounts on NPACI parallel machines and
hands on labs are conducted each day where attendees compile,
run and parallelize example codes, and measure performance of codes after
implementing single PE optimization techniques. After attending this three
day class, attendees are expected to be able to develop parallel
applications in their field of science.
We encourage you to visit the web page and register for these classes if
you are interested.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER
NEW STAFFING INITIATIVES
The University is mounting an initiative to further develop and strengthen all
research groups in the Department. This initiative will last beyond the year
2000. In 1999, the Department will aim to fill
(1) a Chair in Pure Mathematics,
(2) a Chair in Applied Mathematics
(3) two new lectureships in Computer Science.
In 1999-2000, the Department will advertise new lectureships in each of pure
and applied mathematics. In 2000-2001 it is expected that at least 2 further
lectureships will be created.
Within applied mathematics, the strength of the research group is in numerical
analysis, with staff working in multivariate approximation theory, finite
element methods for pdes and spectral problems in pdes and odes. The group is a
a lively one, with many collaborations with staff in nearby Universities
(Warwick, Oxford, Cambridge, Loughborough, Nottingham, Birmingham and all the
London colleges for example are all within 1.5 hours travelling time by road or
rail).
We would welcome applications for the Chair in Applied Mathematics which either
strengthen our research focus in numerical analysis, or which enlarge it to
take in some neighbouring area, still within the broad remit of applied
analysis. The key requirement is an outstanding research record.
People familiar with the US system might find it helpful to know that a UK
lectureship is the equivalent of a US tenure track assistant professorship,
while a Chair is roughly equivalent to a named research chair in a US
department. (The proportion of UK faculty holding the post of Chair, for
example, is much smaller than the number of US faculty hold the post of full
professor, and is not to be confused with the US concept of chair of a
Department.)
Details of the above positions can be found at the Department's WEB page:
http://www.mcs.le.ac.uk
The closing date for applications is February 1st. 1999.

program in scientific computing and related research. A major part
of the candidate's teaching responsibilities will be to assist in
the introduction of scientific computing tools into the classroom
at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The other half of the
candidates time will involve research at the NIAR on large scale computing
projects. Research areas of particular interest to NIAR and the

differential equations; computational fluid dynamics, electromagnetics,
MHD, and acoustics; computational aspects of optimal control and aeroacoustics;
computational aspects of modeling and detection of damage in
engineering materials; and the numerical solution of inverse problems.
NIAR has strong ties to the Wichita aircraft industry. The candidate's
involvement in industry and federally funded research will be strongly
encouraged. Start-up funding for two months summer salary and support
for equipment, travel, and graduate students in the PhD programs in applied
mathematics and engineering is anticipated for the first two years.
