We are sorry to say that Richard D. Sinkhorn, who was well known for his
work in linear algebra and matrix theory, passed away in Houston on April 8th,
1995 following a stroke.

Richard received his Ph.D. degree in 1962 from the University of
Wisconsin, Madison and then joined the Mathematics department of the University
of Houston. At UH, he quickly became a full Professor and supervised 11 Ph.D.
theses as well as many Masters students. In 1985 he was voted Top Professor by
the University Mortar Board Society, (a student organization) and received the
College Teaching Excellence Award in 1992 from the College of Natural Science
and Mathematics.

He leaves a sister, two step-daughters and their children as well as
many friends and admirers. He was a very kind person and will be missed.

Subject: Search for ICASE Director

DIRECTOR, ICASE
(INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING)

A search is being conducted for a Director for the Institute for
Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), which is
co-located with NASA's Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton,
Virginia. The Institute is funded by NASA through the Universities
Space Research Association (USRA). Since its establishment in 1972,
ICASE has conducted unclassified basic research in three major areas:
i) applied and numerical mathematics, including numerical analysis,
algorithm development, and multidisciplinary design optimization; ii)
theoretical, computational, and experimental research in fluid
mechanics in areas of interest to LaRC, including acoustics and
combustion; and iii) applied computer science and parallel computing.

The Institute helps promote cooperative research activities among
scientists and their institutions, and in addition, enhances
communication among researchers in related disciplines by providing an
academic setting within which academic and industrial scientists can
collaborate with NASA scientists and engineers on problems of mutual
interest. The institute maintains a small, permanent staff, augmented
by postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists from universities and
industry. It has been responsible for introducing several innovations
in numerical analysis into computational aerodynamics practice
including spectral methods, multigrid methods, and high-order upwind
schemes.

Salaries and benefits are competitive and attractive, and will depend
on the individual's qualifications. The applicant should be an
individual with demonstrated leadership and vision, outstanding
communications skills, a proven research record in one or more of the
research areas of interest to the Institute, and a thorough
understanding of research management.

Apply no later than 30 June 1995. An application, containing a
complete resume on academic, professional, and personal data,
including three references, should be sent to:

W. D. Cummings,
Executive Director,
Universities Space Research Association,
The American City Building, Suite 212,
Columbia, MD 21044.
