Subject: A proof of Goldbach's Conjecture
In the past year, there have been close to 1,000 visits to this
two-page proof of the hitherto unproved Conjecture, which asserts that
each even positive integer is the sum of two primes. There has been
not one claim of an error. See "A Proof of Goldbach's Conjecture" in
occampress.com. (The paper contains a second two-page proof.)

Subject: New Book, Computational Algorithms for Shallow Water Equations
Computational algorithms for shallow water equations by
Eleuterio F. Toro
This book deals with computational methods for solving systems of
shallow water equations within the broader field of geophysical fluid
dynamics. Such systems, comprised of hyperbolic partial differential
equations, serve as mathematical models for simulating the dynamics of
water flows in open channels, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Practical
applications range from modelling oceanic tides to the breaking of
waves on shallow beaches, roll waves in open channels, flood waves in
rivers, dam-break waves, tsunami wave propagation, and various
environmental fluid dynamics scenarios. Mathematical models of the
shallow-water type are also employed for simulating gas dynamics, such
as the dispersion of heavy gases over the Earth's surface and
atmospheric dynamics. However, the physical complexity of time-
dependent, three-dimensional oceanic and atmospheric flows
necessitates more comprehensive mathematical models than shallow-
water type systems alone. Nevertheless, the basic, one-layer shallow
water equations play a crucial role in providing benchmark solutions
for assessing methodologies intended for more complex models.
Significantly, multilayer shallow water models are currently
undergoing major developments in oceanic and atmospheric dynamics,
where the underlying concepts and methodologies from the basic
one-layer shallow water equations in this book find
applicability. This book offers fundamental concepts and methods
essential for constructing advanced high-order computational
algorithms within the frameworks of finite volume and discontinuous
Galerkin finite element methods. The finite volume methodology is
developed in full detail, presenting non-linear, fully discrete
high-order upwind and centred methods for solving the non-linear,
time-dependent two-dimensional shallow water equations.

Subject: Postdoc Positions, Univ of Helsinki, Finland
Due to unforeseen successes of researchers previously contracted to
these positions, I have two postdoc positions available at the
University of Helsinki, both to be filled ASAP. The focus of both
positions can be adapted to both pure analysts and people with a more
numerical focus.
1. The first, shorter one (roughly one year), involves online
optimisation for dynamic process tomography. For a numerical focus,
preferred skills include numerical PDEs and Julia programming, and,
for a more theoretical focus, regularisation theory (inverse problems
theory), or, even, geometric measure theory.
2. The second, longer one (funding available until July 2027) involves
optimisation and inverse problems in spaces of measures. For a
theoretical focus, knowledge of convex analysis and geometric measure
theory are highly desirable. For a more numerical/applied focus,
skills in numerical PDEs are required, and Rust programming skills or
the capacity to learn are a huge advantage.
If a candidatess skills match both projects, other hiring combinations
may also be possible.
If you know of possible candidates for these positions, please let
them know. Enquiries and applications should be sent to
tuomo.valkonen@helsinki.fi. Initially, a CV and a publication list is
enough, although some candidates may be asked to provide references.
Applications will be processed constantly.

The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS)
is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB
comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are
funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes
belong to the Leibniz Association.
WIAS invites applications for a PhD student position (f/m/d)
(Ref. 24/12) in the Research Group 'Stochastic algorithms and
nonparametric statistics to be filled at October 1st, 2024, or the
earliest possible date thereafter. The position is associated with
the SFB/Transregio 388. SFB/Transregio 388 investigates the interplay
between rough analysis and stochastic dynamics. Central aspects
include rough paths and subsequent developments for nonlinear
stochastic partial differential equations. The theory of signatures
and rough volatility also provides important connections to algebra,
statistics, and financial mathematics.
Website: https://sites.google.com/view/trr388/
Rough volatility models are an important class of equity models in
mathematical finance. Due to the lack of Markov and semi-martingale
properties, proper analysis and numerics for rough volatility models
is challenging. Project B02 within the SFB/Transregio 388 is concerned
with microstructural foundations of rough volatility models, using
techniques from stochastic analysis, rough paths, and regularity
structures. Specific tasks include: Analysis of the (expected)
signature of Hawkes and other pure jump processes and their cumulants;
Derivation of scaling limits for such processes to rough volatility
models; Extensions to the setting of regularity structures for rough
volatility. The position is hosted in Research Group 'Stochastic
algorithms and nonparametric statistics' at WIAS, and is a
collaboration between Ch. Bayer (WIAS), U. Horst (HU Berlin), and
D. Kreher (HU Berlin). It includes the possibility for a doctorate.
We are looking for: candidates with a master's degree in mathematics
or a closely related field with a strong background in stochastic
analysis. Prior knowledge in rough paths and financial mathematics is
beneficial.
