Subject: Werner C. Rheinboldt
Werner Rheinboldt, a pioneer in numerical analysis, passed away March
19, 2024. He was 96.
Werner is well-known for his many contributions to numerical analysis.
His seminal work, jointly with James Ortega, Iterative Solution of
Nonlinear Equations in Several Variables, laid the foundations for the
development of algorithms for the solution of nonlinear equations and
optimization problems. Originally published in 1970, this book is now
available as a SIAM Classic in Applied Mathematics.
Another major contribution was his work with Ivo Babuska on error
estimates for finite element methods. These estimates can be used for
practical a-posteriori assessments of accuracy and in the design of
adaptive finite element solvers.
The importance of geometry in numerical analysis stands for a further
topic that Werner brought up already in the 1980s when he started to
work on differential-algebraic equations as differential equations on
manifolds.
Werner was the President of SIAM (1976-1978) and the A.W. Mellon
Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh (1978-1998).
Further career stations were the Universities of Syracuse and Maryland
as well as the National Bureau of Standards.
Werner will be missed by his collaborators and colleagues around the
world.

Subject: Jerome Spanier (1930-2024)
It is with great sadness we report that Jerome (Jerry) Spanier passed
away on March 1, 2024 in Irvine, California.
Jerry was a dedicated teacher of mathematics and guided 16 students
through their doctoral degrees. His scholarly contributions to
mathematics included authoring three books. In 1974, he teamed with
chemist Keith Oldham to write "The Fractional Calculus: Theory and
Applications of Differentiation and Integration to Arbitrary Order"
which provides the theory underlying the generalized differential and
integral operators and their application to classical calculus and
diffusion problems. In 1987, again with Oldham, he wrote "An Atlas of
Functions: with Equator, the Atlas Function Calculator". This atlas
provides algorithms for accurate calculations of functions including
Bessel, Legendre, Gamma, etc. and explains the interrelationships
between the functions and computational strategies. In 1969, he
partnered with physicist Ely Gelbard and wrote "Monte Carlo Principles
and Neutron Transport Problems". This seminal book develops the
foundational mathematical theory required to solve the radiative
transport equation using Monte Carlo methods. This work has broad
applications in areas as diverse as nuclear engineering, computer
graphics, and biomedical optics.
Jerry received his Ph.D. degree in mathematics from the University of
Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, in 1955. He was Professor Emeritus of
Mathematics from Claremont Graduate University (CGU), Claremont, CA,
where most of his academic career was spent. Prior to his CGU
appointment in 1971, he worked in the industry for 16 years. In recent
years he was a Researcher in mathematics at the Beckman Laser
Institute (BLI) at the University of California, Irvine where his
research concentrated on the mathematical modeling and computation for
simulation of light transport in tissue.

Subject: Solve-then-discretize algorithms?
Can anyone point me to examples of this framework in action (in any
area of computational mathematics) and the first use of the term
"solve-then-discretize"? Comments and thoughts are also welcome! I am
looking to put together some broad notes on its history and use.
An example of what I mean by "solve-then-discretize" as opposed to
discretize-then-solve is this paper by Horning and Townsend (in the
context of spectral methods for eigenvalue problems):
https://epubs.siam.org/doi/abs/10.1137/19M1238708 The main idea is to
directly manipulate an object (such as an operator) and discretize at
the last possible moment.

Subject: New Book, Algorithmic Mathematics in Machine Learning
Algorithmic Mathematics in Machine Learning by Bastian Bohn, Jochen
Garcke, and Michael Griebel
This unique book explores several well-known machine learning and data
analysis algorithms from a mathematical and programming perspective.
The authors present machine learning methods, review the underlying
mathematics, and provide programming exercises to deepen the reader's
understanding; accompany application areas with exercises that explore
the unique characteristics of real-world data sets (e.g., image data
for pedestrian detection, biological cell data); and provide new
terminology and background information on mathematical concepts, as
well as exercises, in 'info-boxes' throughout the text.

Subject: New Book, Machine Learning for Asset Management and Pricing
Machine Learning for Asset Management and Pricing
by Henry Schellhorn and Tianmin Kong
This textbook covers the latest advances in machine learning methods
for asset management and asset pricing. Recent research in deep
learning applied to finance shows that some of the (usually
confidential) techniques used by asset managers result in better
investments than the more standard techniques. Cutting-edge material
is integrated with mainstream finance theory and statistical methods
to provide a coherent narrative. Coverage includes an original
machine learning method for strategic asset allocation; the
no-arbitrage theory applied to a wide portfolio of assets as well as
other asset management methods, such as mean-variance, Bayesian
methods, linear factor models, and strategic asset allocation; recent
techniques such as neural networks and reinforcement learning, and
more classical ones, including nonlinear and linear programming,
principal component analysis, dynamic programming, and clustering.
The authors use technical and nontechnical arguments to accommodate
readers with different levels of mathematical preparation. The book is
easy to read yet rigorous and contains a large number of exercises.

The duration of the contract is 12 months with possible renewing. The
deadline for applications is 29th April 2024. This contract is part of
the PRIN 2022 project "Efficient numerical schemes and optimal control

Verona (Giacomo Albi) and Trento (Ilya Peshkov).
The project aims to develop a fourth-order accurate numerical method
for solving the Navier-Stokes equations in moving domains, with the
potential for extending its accuracy to higher orders. This method
adopts a monolithic approach, solving the equations simultaneously and
resulting in a large linear system at each time step. The numerical
algorithm will be implemented on 3D parallel architectures, making
extensive use of MPI and PETSc libraries. This method falls under the
category of unfitted boundary methods, where the domain is immersed in
a fixed grid and curved boundaries are handled using ghost-point
techniques. Spatial multiscale effects, influenced by potential high
curvature of the boundaries, will be addressed using a multigrid
approach.

Subject: Call for Organizers, Boundary and Interior Layers 2026
The conference in Boundary and Interior Layers, BAIL 2024 is currently
being organised by Maria Gonzalez Taboada (and her colleagues), and
will take place in La Coruna, Spain, during June 10-14, 2024 (see
https://bail2024.udc.es/ for more info). It has been customary to
announce at each BAIL conference the location of the succeeding one,
and this is the reason for my email. On behalf of the BAIL
International Steering Committee, we invite proposals for the hosting
of BAIL 2026. As usual the conference should run from a Monday to a
Friday; in principle it can be held at any time during 2026, but
potential organisers should note that in general most of the
participants come from Europe, so it's desirable to hold the
conference at a time that does not clash with teaching commitments in
many European countries. The location should be somewhere that is
easily accessible by international travel.
The BAIL International Steering Committee chooses the location of each
BAIL conference but it has no financial resources. Thus the organisers
of BAIL 2026 have to finance the conference from their own resources:
registration fees, grants, support from the hosting institution, etc.
To make a formal proposal, please send me an email by 31 May 2024
indicating: (i) you are willing to organise BAIL 2026, and your
institution has lecture room facilities suitable for hosting the
conference that will be available at the proposed time of BAIL 2026
[e.g., they are not used for the teaching of classes at the time of
the conference]; (ii) conference participants can find satisfactory
accommodation in the neighbourhood of the conference; (iii) how easy
it is for international travellers to reach your host city; (iv)
approximate dates (i.e., in which month will it be held?) plus some
explanation for this choice [e.g. local climate, but also consider
availability of participants, many of whom are confined to academic
year holidays]; (v) a brief statement of your plans for financial
support [we know it can't be guaranteed 100% in advance but we'd like
to know that you have some ideas for solving this potential problem];
(vi) anything else relevant that comes to mind, e.g., if you have
experience in organising conferences, if you expect to have any help
from others in organising the conference, etc.
Your proposal does not have to be lengthy, 1 page may be sufficient
provided it addresses the above numbered points. If you are possibly
interested in making a proposal but you are unsure, or if you have any
questions, please feel free to email me
(gabriel.barrenechea@strath.ac.uk) to discuss these matters before
making a formal proposal. Also, if you can think of any person that
might be interested in hosting a BAIL conference, please forward this
email to her/him. The final decision for the location of BAIL 2026
will be taken by a vote of the BAIL International Steering Committee,
of which I am the Chairperson. Once the location and dates have been
agreed by this committee, the local organiser has complete control
over the conference (selection of speakers, talks timetable, deciding
the registration fee, etc.), but is welcome to consult the committee
for advice.
