Subject: New Book, A Variational Approach to Optimal Control of ODEs
A Variational Approach to Optimal Control of ODEs
by Pablo Pedregal
This self-contained book presents in a unified, systematic way the
basic principles of optimal control governed by ODEs. Using a
variational perspective, the author incorporates important
restrictions like constraints for control and state, as well as the
state system itself, into the equivalent variational reformulation of
the problem. The fundamental issues of existence of optimal solutions,
optimality conditions, and numerical approximation are then examined
from this variational viewpoint.

Subject: Call to Organize, Boundary and Interior Layers, 2024
The conference in Boundary and Interior Layers, BAIL 2022 is currently
being organised by Gabriela Armentano (and her colleagues), and will
take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during November 28 to December
2, 2022 (see http://mate.dm.uba.ar/~bail2022/ for more info). It has
been customary to announce at each BAIL conference the location of the
succeeding one, and this is the reason for my email. On behalf of the
BAIL International Steering Committee, we invite proposals for the
hosting of BAIL 2024. As usual the conference should run from a Monday
to a Friday; in principle it can be held at any time during 2024, but
potential organisers should note that in general most of the
participants come from Europe, so it's desirable to hold the
conference at a time that does not clash with teaching commitments in
many European countries. The location should be somewhere that is
easily accessible by international travel. The BAIL International
Steering Committee chooses the location of each BAIL conference but it
has no financial resources. Thus the organisers of BAIL 2024 have to
finance the conference from their own resources: registration fees,
grants, support from the hosting institution, etc. To make a formal
proposal, please send me an email by 31 October 2022 indicating:
(i) you are willing to organise BAIL 2024, and your institution has
lecture room facilities suitable for hosting the conference that will
be available at the proposed time of BAIL 2024 [e.g., they are not
used for the teaching of classes at the time of the conference]
(ii) conference participants can find satisfactory accommodation in
the neighbourhood of the conference
(iii) how easy it is for international travelers to reach your host
city
(iv) approximate dates (i.e., in which month will it be held?) plus
some explanation for this choice [e.g. local climate, but also
consider availability of participants, many of whom are confined to
academic year holidays]
(v) a brief statement of your plans for financial support [we know it
can't be guaranteed 100% in advance but we'd like to know that you
have some ideas for solving this potential problem]
(vi) anything else relevant that comes to mind, e.g., if you have
experience in organising conferences, if you expect to have any help
from others in organising the conference, etc.
Your proposal does not have to be lengthy, 1 page may be sufficient
provides it addresses the above numbered points. If you are possibly
interested in making a proposal but you are unsure, or if you have any
questions, please feel free to email me
(gabriel.barrenechea@strath.ac.uk) to discuss these matters before
making a formal proposal. Also, if you can think of any person that
might be interested in hosting a BAIL conference, please forward this
email to her/him. The final decision for the location of BAIL 2024
will be taken by a vote of the BAIL International Steering Committee,
of which I am the Chairperson. Once the location and dates have been
agreed by this committee, the local organiser has complete control
over the conference (selection of speakers, talks timetable, deciding
the registration fee, etc. etc.), but is welcome to consult the
committee for advice.

including various deep neural networks, to represent the parameter /
state or to learn the relation between the parameter and state
variables, with a focus on either practical implementation or
theoretical analysis.
The project combines modern machine learning techniques and
(computational) inverse problems. Therefore, a solid foundation in
mathematics, or computer science or related disciplines is required,
and experiences with numerical methods and programming in python etc
are highly desirable.
Please send your application by September 15th, 2022 (cover letter,
CV, grade reports) electronically to Bangti Jin via

Subject: PhD Position, Modelling and Simulation, BCAM-Tekniker
We are looking for a PhD student to work on the multiscale simulation
of hydrogen-induced embrittlement (HE) of steels. This research will
be jointly supervised by Dr. Mauricio Rincon Bonilla from the Basque
Center for Applied mathematics (BCAM) and Dr. Iban Quintana from
Tekniker. HE is connected to the fast diffusion of hydrogen atoms
through the solid material lattice, often by quantum mechanical
tunnelling (even at room temperature) followed by interaction with
crystal defects, such as vacancies, dislocations, and grain
boundaries. Despite great efforts, this process is still poorly
understood. Moreover, the in-silico analysis of realistic,
multicomponent steel specimens remains a great computational
challenge. The student will combine micromechanical and structural
characterization techniques to study the behaviour of hydrogen-charged
steels prepared at Tekniker. He/she will combine these analyses with
hydrogen diffusion simulations developed and performed at BCAM. With
this information, we aim to propose strategies for the development of
new steels, heat treatments or coatings against HE. Modelling
activities will initially focus on the atomistic scale, combining
quantum mechanical methods, molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo
schemes. The insights obtained from these studies will be incorporated
into a multiscale framework to allow direct comparison with
macroscopic experiments, as well as the parameterization of continuous
phase field or finite elements models.
Deadline: 31 August 2022
Applications at: http://www.bcamath.org/en/research/job/ic2022-07-bcam-tekniker-joint-phd-student-position-modelling-and-simulation-hydrogen-embrittlement-in-steels
