Subject: Webinar, Software for Linear Algebra Targeting Exascales (SLATE)

In this 30 minute live webinar, Jack Dongara will discuss the SLATE
Project. SLATE is to provide fundamental dense linear algebra
capabilities for today's high-performance computing (HPC)
community. To this end, SLATE will provide basic dense matrix
operations (e.g., matrix multiplication, rank-k update, triangular
solve), linear systems solvers, least square solvers, singular value
and eigenvalue solvers.
The ultimate objective of SLATE is to replace the Scalable Linear
Algebra PACKage (ScaLAPACK) library, which has become the industry
standard for dense linear algebra operations in distributed memory
environments. However, after two decades of operation, ScaLAPACK is
past the end of its lifecycle and overdue for a replacement, as it can
hardly be retrofitted to support hardware accelerators, which are an
integral part of today's HPC hardware infrastructure.

Probability and Mathematical Statistics: Theory, Applications, and
Practice in R by Mary C. Meyer
This book develops the theory of probability and mathematical
statistics with the goal of analyzing real-world data. Throughout the
text, the R package is used to compute probabilities, check
analytically computed answers, simulate probability distributions,
illustrate answers with appropriate graphics, and help students
develop intuition surrounding probability and statistics. Examples,
demonstrations, and exercises in the R programming language serve to
reinforce ideas and facilitate understanding and confidence.
Mary C. Meyer is a statistics professor at Colorado State University,
where her main area of research is estimation and inference in
statistical models with inequality constraints. This includes
nonparametric function estimation using constrained regression
splines, density and hazard function estimation with shape
constraints, and models with order restrictions.

In this book the two principal aspects of the cardiovascular system
are addressed: arterial circulation and heart function. All aspects of
the problem are described, ranging from data imaging acquisition,
stating the basic physical principles, analyzing the associated
mathematical models that comprise PDE and ODE systems, proposing sound
and efficient numerical methods for their approximation, and reporting
numerical results for both benchmark problems and clinically inspired
problems. Critical issues involve filtering the data, identifying the
parameters of mathematical models, devising optimal treatments and
accounting for uncertainties. For this reason, the final part of the
book is devoted to control and inverse problems, including parameter
estimation, uncertainty quantification and the development of
reduced-order models.

equations, both from an analytical and a numerical point of few. As

fundamental properties of special structures (continuous, discrete,
and stochastic) using tailor-made matrix analysis for sparse systems,
multiscale asymptotics techniques, approximation theory for
measure-valued equations, distributed parameter control,

Contributed talks are welcome and suggestions can be submitted by

A 2 year postdoc position is open at Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles
(Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium) within the Numerical Analysis
Group lead by Yvan Notay and Artem Napov.
Research are to be conducted within the framework of the (H2020
founded) Energy oriented Centre of Excellence in computing
applications (EoCoE). This initiative aims at porting towards exascale
some of the biggest European simulation codes in the domain of
energy. The Numerical Analysis Group contributes with the linear
system solver AGMG (http://agmg.eu), which is integrated in several of
the EoCoE application codes. The successful candidate will work both
on the improvement of the integration of AGMG in these codes, and on
the improvement of its core performance on extreme scale
architectures.
AGMG is a linear system solver based on algebraic multigrid, using
some unique features that allow it to be world leader in its
category. Altogether, publications related to AGMG have attracted more
than 800 citations. Entering the team represents a unique opportunity
to work on a cutting edge project mixing numerical mathematics and HPC
programming.

Project: Investigating prospective teachers experiences in the
mathematics teacher training degree at UNICAMP
Supervisor: Lucio Tunes dos Santos
Job Description: The lack of teachers in STEM (science, technology,
engineering and mathematics) areas is a worldwide concern and the
scenario is not different in Brazil. Even at the University of
Campinas (UNICAMP), which is among the top universities in the
country, the completion rate in mathematics teaching is below the
average for other degrees and worryingly low considering the relevance
of the profession and the shortage of professionals available. The
main objective of this project is to investigate the experience of
prospective mathematics teachers enrolled in the training degree at
UNICAMP aiming at understanding what are the influences behind the
particularly low completion rate in this degree. The experience of
those involved suggests a few possible issues such as: admission of
students with low prior knowledge in mathematics, challenging
transition to higher education, low attractiveness of the teaching
career and lack of support during higher education. A secondary
objective is to understand the profile of those who choose this career
at UNICAMP, aiming at developing strategies to attract and increase
the interest for such an important career for the development of
Brazilian education. Under the guidance of the teacher Laura Rifo.

studies in mathematics, mathematics education and teacher training. It

A two-year postdoctoral research opportunity in validated computation
of special functions is available at the National Institute of
Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD through the US National

NIST's Applied and Computational Mathematics Division (ACMD) is
developing an online system for generating validated tables of special
function values with an error certification computed to user-specified
precision. A typical user might be a researcher or software developer
testing his own code or confirming the accuracy of results obtained
from a commercial or publicly available package. The goal is to create
a standalone system, but also link to and from the NIST Digital
Library of Mathematical Functions (https://dlmf.nist.gov/).
The project, DLMF Standard Reference Tables on Demand (DLMF Tables),
is a collaborative effort with the University of Antwerp Computational
Mathematics Research Group (CMA) led by Annie Cuyt. A beta site based
on CMA's MpIeee, a multiprecision IEEE 754/854 compliant C++ floating
point arithmetic library, is available at
http://dlmftables.uantwerpen.be/ . The successful candidate will
advance our current efforts in the field of validated computing
through the continued research and development of multiple precision
function software providing guaranteed error bounds at arbitrary
precision. The associate will also help expand DLMF Tables into a

We have one Postdoc and two PhD positions in machine learning and data
mining for personalized cancer screening at SimulaMet (Simula
Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering) and Cancer Registry of
Norway, Oslo, Norway. The positions are available as a part of the
Norwegian-funded research project DeCipher in collaboration between
SimulaMet, Cancer Registry of Norway, Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory (LLNL), and Karolinska University Hospital.
The DeCipher project aims to develop a data-driven framework to
provide a personalized time-varying risk assessment for cancer
initiation and identify subgroups of individuals and factors
leading to similar disease progression. Specifically, the following
three sub-projects will be investigated:

individualized disease trajectories from longitudinal screening data

- Development of geometric deep learning framework for reconstruction

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umea
University is opening a PhD position in mathematical statistics,
focused on statistical learning with sparsity and deep network
models. The position is for four years of research, including courses

Project description:
Modern statistical learning is at the forefront of the advances in
data science and artificial intelligence, and the main objective of
this doctoral position is to develop cutting-edge mathematical theory
and the next generation of computational tools to address the
challenges in these areas with an emphasis on learning with sparsity
and other emerging data models, and to potentially explore their
applications in AI, including medical imaging, automated quality
control, and self-driving cars, evaluated on both simulated and real
data. Understanding and exploiting structure in data to extract useful
information from big datasets with the purpose of making optimal
decisions will be the main research thrust for this position, where we
investigate data models ranging from sparsity, to rank constraints, to
deep network models, such as generative adversarial networks.

A PhD position is available at Cerfacs (Toulouse, France) within the
Parallel Algorithm team led by Prof Ulrich Rude. The research will
focus on fast and robust solvers for matrices arising in the
discretization of partial differential equations governing subsurface
flows in porous media. The work will be done in an industrial
partnership with EDF R&D, the research division of the French electric
utility company EDF.
We are looking for a candidate with a Master (or equivalent) in the
fields of computational fluid dynamics or applied mathematics and who
should have interest in numerical algorithms, iterative solvers and
high performance computing.
