The field of information-based complexity deals with the analysis of
the information complexity for multivariate problems. A crucial
question is, for instance, under which circumstances one can avoid a
curse of dimensionality. The Autumn School on the "Introduction to
Information-Based Complexity" gives an introduction to basic concepts
in information-based complexity, and illustrate some of the theory by
examples such as high-dimensional numerical integration or function
approximation.
The school can be viewed as introduction to the workshop "Multivariate
Algorithms and Information-Based Complexity", which takes place at the
Johann Radon Institute (RICAM), Linz, Austria, on November 5-9, 2018.
Lectures will be given by Prof. Dr. Aicke Hinrichs (JKU, Linz) and PD
Dr. Peter Kritzer (RICAM, Linz).
The Autumn School is part of the training activities in the Innovative
Training Network ROMSOC ("Reduced Order Modelling, Simulation and
Optimization of coupled System"e) funded by the European Union's
Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The registration for
the school is free and the school is open for all interested PhD and
Master students.

PhD Position in Mathematics, Institut fur Mathematik der

Applications are invited for a (1+2)-years PhD position on part time
(50 %) at the Chair for Scientific Computing, Institute for
Mathematics of the Julius-Maximilians-University Wuerzburg, Germany.
The compensation is based on the civil service collective agreement as
per TV-L. The goals of the PhD work are to develop and analyse Neural
Networks with stochastic weights using numerical and analytical tools
including optimisation, control theory, and statistics, and to apply
the resulting methodologies to implement efficient learning procedures
for solving inverse problems governed by differential models. This
research will be carried out promoting collaboration between
mathematics, natural and social sciences, and medicine. The PhD
candidate is expected to attend courses appropriate to the
aforementioned goals. For additional information concerning the

PhD Applicants must hold a Master Degree in Mathematics (Informatics,
Natural Sciences, Engineering) with distinct interests in the topics
mentioned above. Applicants should send (via e-mail) an application

the MSc or Diploma Thesis, bibliography of published work (if any), a
letter of recommendation, and names andemail-addresses of at least two
