The IX PanAmerican Workshop in applied mathematics and computational
science will be held in Varadero, Cuba June 11-18 2018 The objective
of these workshops is to create cooperative research activities based
on international collaboration and to promote the development of
applied and computational mathematics in Latin America. To accomplish
these goals, we must bring together practicing applied mathematicians
and computational scientists in the Americas to exchange research
information, and create a forum for researchers to refine, enhance and
implement research activities. The purpose is to continue to center in
areas of applied and computational mathematics, such as, computational
fluid dynamics, numerical optimization, high-performance computing,
grid generation, computer algebra, and dynamical systems aimed to
evaluate data related to areas of environmental, social and economic
development in the Americas.

The 25th International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods
(DD25) will be held at Memorial University, in St. John's,
Newfoundland, Canada from July 23 to 27, 2018. The meeting will
discuss the latest results on domain decomposition methods, linear and
nonlinear solvers for PDEs etc. The conference will be proceeded by a
one day short course suitable for beginning graduate students, on
Sunday July 22, 2018. An opening reception will be held that evening
for all participants.

An Introduction to the high-order upwind Hybridized discontinuous
Galerkin methods for partial differential equations

In this short course, we present a systematic and constructive
derivation of hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods using an
upwind framework. The key behind our construction is the Godunov
method and the Rankine-Hugoniot condition. We will show in details the
construction of an upwind HDG framework and its application to
constructively derive HDG methods for a large class of partial
differential equations (PDEs) including elliptic, parabolic,
hyperbolic, and mixed-types PDEs. The participants will learn how to
apply this framework to derive HDG methods for
convection-diffusion-reactions equations (and its subsets), Maxwell
equations, and linearized shallow water equation. The well-posedness
of the HDG framework will be discussed and the well-posedness analysis
of the HDG formulation for the convection-diffusion-reaction will be
carried out in details. The participants will learn a step-by-step
convergence analysis of the HDG method for the linearized shallow
water equations. We will discuss the extension to nonlinear systems
and active research topics.
At the end of the short course, participants will, without wary, be
able to construct HDG methods for their applications of interest. They
will learn how HDG is implemented in practice and accompanied HDG
Matlab codes will be provided at end of the short course.
Outline of the course: 1) Introduction to the Discontinuous Galerkin
method for hyperbolic PDEs; 2) Derivation of the upwind HDG framework
for hyperbolic PDEs; 3) Application of the upwind HDG framework to
convection-diffusion- reaction equations; 4) Application of the upwind
HDG framework to Maxwell equations; 5) Application of the upwind HDG
framework to linearized shallow water equations; 6) Well-posedness of
the HDG framework and its application to the
convection-diffusion-reaction equations; 7) A convergence analysis for
the upwind HDG method for the linearized shallow equations; 8)
Extension of the HDG framework to nonlinear PDEs and active research
topics; 9) Implementation aspects and the details of Matlab codes for
convection- diffusion-reaction equations.

The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the Johannes Kepler
University Linz invites applications for a position as a Professor for
Mathematical Methods in Medicine and Life Sciences to begin
immediately. The appointment will be in accordance with Section 98 of
the Universities Act. An evaluation will follow after a four-year
period. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and manage
the Institute of Knowledge-based Mathematical Systems. The successful
candidate is expected to focus on a research topic in a current field
of mathematical methods in medicine and life sciences taking
mathematical modeling, analysis, and the simulation of problems in
medicine and life sciences into account. Desired, but not required, is
experience in cooperation with scientists in the field of life
sciences and/or physicians. Furthermore, the successful candidate
will take part in at least one field of excellence in mathematics and
areas of development at the JKU as well as work together with the
"Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics
(RICAM)". RICAM currently intends to create a working group on the
development and analysis of mathematical methods for solving problems
in medicine and life sciences. RICAM also internds to offer the group
leader position to the successful candidate. The successful candidate
will be expected to contribute to research and teaching in
collaboration with Faculty of Medicine at the JKU.
Participation in teaching in all degree programs in Mathematics
(Bachelor's/Master's/Doctorate and teacher education studies) in
German and English in all areas of Applied Mathematics as well as
participation in service courses is required. Non-German speaking
applicants may hold courses in English during the first two years.
The successful candidate will be expected to independently fulfill
administrative duties. Requirements for the position include having a
doctorate degree and post-doctorate degree (venia docendi) or a
comparable (internationally recognized) post-doctorate degree in
mathematics. The Johannes Kepler University Linz wishes to increase

and teaching. The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science
at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a
Professor of numerical methods for partial differential equations (pay
grade: W2) to commence 1 October 2018. This permanent civil service
position is offered with the possibility of being promoted to a W3
professor upon a successful performance review of research and
teaching in accordance with the Bayreuth-Track Personnel Development
Model for professors at the University of Bayreuth. The successful
candidate is an internationally recognised expert in the fields of
numerical methods for partial differential equations and scientific
computing. A relation to uncertainty quantification and/or multiscale
problems is of particular interest. Candidates for the advertised
position should have experience in the acquisition of third party
funding and the willingness to co-operate with the existing numerical
analysis groups, in particular in view of joint grant proposals. The

The positions are based in Waterloo, one of the fastest growing

participating faculty with national and international reputation in a
diverse set of cross-disciplinary research areas unified by the field
of mathematical and statistical modelling. The PhD program is
interdisciplinary with the distribution of participating faculty in
both math and non-math departments, at approximately 50-50. In most

application-oriented project will have two co-supervisors, one with
expertise in mathematical and statistical sciences and the other with
specialized expertise in the project-specific domain application
involving modelling. The application domains for all proposed PhD
