Subject: V6.0 of Scotch, aka "the 20 y.o. Scotch" edition, is out

We announce the release, as libre/free software, of version 6.0.0 of
the SCOTCH and PT-SCOTCH software package and library for sequential
and parallel graph partitioning, sequential and parallel graph
clustering, sequential mesh/hypergraph partitioning and static
mapping, and sequential and parallel sparse matrix block ordering.
20 years ago, to the day (as of Dec. 2nd), the first line of Scotch
was written...

Major new features
- Sequential graph repartitioning
- Sequential graph partitioning with fixed vertices
- Sequential graph repartitioning with fixed vertices
- Key algorithms of the (formerly) sequential Scotch library are now
multi- threaded, resulting in much faster run time.
- Many internal distributed graph handling routines have been exposed
in the interface, such as for graph banding, coarsening and
induction. Our aim is to provide people working with unstructured
meshes a toolbox of building blocks for implementing their
algorithms.
- Scotch now embeds its own pseudo-random generator, for improved
reproducibility.

Parallel static mapping and parallel direct k-way graph repartitioning
with fixed vertices will be available in release 6.1.

Scotch can be freely downloaded, under the terms of the CeCILL-C free
software license. To ease the development, diffusion, and circulation
of information regarding the SCOTCH project, most of its resources are
hosted on the InriaGforge platform provided by INRIA. Please refer to
the SCOTCH web page at: http://www.labri.fr/~pelegrin/scotch/
for more information. People interested in the SCOTCH project are
welcome to subscribe to the "scotch-announces" mailing list at:

Subject: New Deadline, Reproducible Science, Norway, Jan 2013

Winter School on Reproducible Science and Modern Scientific Software
January 20th-25th 2013, Dr. Holms Hotel, Geilo, Norway.

I would like to announce the updated program for the 13th winter
school in eScience. The registration deadline has also been extended
to December 14th or until our allocation of rooms runs out. The
updated program can be found on the winter school webpages.

The Winter School will give an introduction to reproducible science
and modern techniques for scientific software development. A major
problem with the computational science community today is that many
published results are impossible to reproduce. This problem has
recently received a lot of attention, and the aim of the winter school
is that participants will be able to apply the learned techniques to
make their own research reproducible. Topics that will be covered
include reproducible research, verification and validation, software
testing, and continuous integration.

This years winter school will be given by four domain experts. Rasmus
E. Benestad is a Senior Scientist at the Norwegian Meteorological
Institute and author of several scientific books, André R. Brodtkorb
is a researcher at SINTEF, Johan S. Seland is the leader of the
Heterogeneous Computing research group at SINTEF, and Fernando Perez
is a researcher at U.C. Berkeley and the creator and lead developer of
iPython.

Participants are encouraged to present their own research in a poster.

Subject: Winter School, Hierarchical Matrices, Germany, Mar 2013

I would like to announce the next winter school on hierarchical
matrices.

Date: 11th to 15th of March, 2013
Place: Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Leipzig
Registration: 28th of February, 2013. Early registration recommended!
Organizers: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Wolfgang Hackbusch, MPI MIS Leipzig
Prof. Dr. Lars Grasedyck, RWTH Aachen
Prof. Dr. Steffen Börm, CAU Kiel
Dr. Ronald Kriemann, MPI MIS Leipzig
Website: http://www.mis.mpg.de/scicomp/winterschool/2013/

Hierarchical matrix techniques can be used to efficiently treat dense
matrices resulting, e.g., from the discretization of partial
differential equations or integral equations. The data-sparse
representation also allows us to construct efficient and robust
preconditioners for differential and integral equations, to evaluate
matrix functions and to solve matrix equations.

The winter school is split into two parts: the morning sessions focus
on the theoretical foundations of hierarchical matrices, e.g.,
efficient algorithms, complexity and error estimates, while the
afternoon sessions are concerned with the practical aspects of
hierarchical matrices. Using the HLib library
(cf. http://www.hlib.org), the participants learn how to implement
fundamental algorithms and carry out numerical experiments.

The UCSD Graduate Program in Computational Science, Mathematics and
Engineering (CSME) is a campus-wide interdisciplinary Ph.D. and M.S.
program designed to train the next generation of scientists,
mathematicians, and engineers in the use of modern tools of
computational science. The CSME Ph.D Program is integrated into the
existing doctoral programs of six core participating departments:

Department of Mathematics
Department of Physics
Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
Department of Computer Science & Engineering
Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
Department of Structural Engineering

Participants in the CSME Doctoral Program obtain a Ph.D. from their
"home" department in their respective field, together with a formal UC
"specialization" in Computational Science.

CSME doctoral theses span diverse research areas such as fluid
mechanics, atmospheric science, climate modeling, materials science,
particle physics, cosmology, general relativity, biophysics, quantum
chemistry, medical imaging, finance, nonlinear dynamics, data science,
and parallel computing. CSME doctoral students are typically
supported by a combination of teaching assistantships, research
assistantships, and fellowships.

Application for admission into the CSME M.S. and Ph.D. Programs for
Fall 2013 is outlined on the CSME Website:

The University of Chicago has started a Computational and Applied
Mathematics Initiative (CAMI), housed within the Department of
Statistics.

The initiative is motivated by an increasing interest in analyzing and
modeling high dimensional data, both static and dynamic, and handling
very large data sets in multiple scientific domains, which has led to
an increased flow of ideas between applied mathematics, statistics and
computation. A synergy is emerging among fields such as statistical
modeling of high dimensional data, parameter estimation, optimization,
machine learning, dynamical systems, and numerical analysis.

We invite potential PhD students interested in computational and
applied mathematics with a data analytic flavor to apply:

http://www.stat.uchicago.edu/admissions/index.shtml

The CAMI faculty research interests include: bioinformatics,
computational neuroscience, environmental and spatial statistics,
machine learning, mathematical finance and econometrics, Monte Carlo
methods, numerical linear/multilinear algebra, optimization, and
pattern recognition.

The University of Chicago has had a tradition in applied and
comutational mathematics education (past faculty and students include
George Birkhoff, Fisher Black, Alberto Calderon, Robert Floyd, Herman
Goldstine, Richard Hamming, Alston Householder, Tjalling Koopmans,
Martin Kruskal, Harry Markowitz, Nicolas Metropolis, Albert
Tucker). The CAMI represents part of the University's long-term goal
in building on this tradition.

Please forward this to your students. They should apply to our
Statistics PhD program by 12/31/12, indicating interest in CAMI in
their statement.
