SIAM Conference on Control and Its Applications (CT13)
July 8-10, 2013
Town and Country Resort & Convention Center
San Diego, California, USA
http://www.siam.org/meetings/ct13/

The field of control theory is central to a wide range of aerospace,
energy, automotive and advanced technological systems and is
increasingly recognized as fundamental for emerging fields ranging
from nanotechnology, smart grid to cell regulation. Moreover, in
addition to its traditional ubiquity in process regulation for the
physical sciences and engineering, control concepts now pervade the
biological, computer, and social sciences. This conference will
showcase a wide range of topics in control and systems theory. The
topics and applications include control of PDEs, computational
mathematics for control and optimization, real-time optimization and
data assimilation, cooperative control for unmanned autonomous
vehicles, differential games, cellular and biological regulation,
control of hybrid systems, control techniques for financial
mathematics, biomedical control, risk sensitive control and filtering,
control of smart systems, flow control and quantum control. This
conference is a continuation of a series of meetings started in 1989
in San Francisco.

Subject: Positions at NIST: UQ, multiscale materials modeling

The NIST Information Technology Laboratory anticipates filling one or
more positions within its Applied and Computational Mathematics
Division (ACMD) during the coming year to research and develop
techniques and tools for multiscale modeling and uncertainty
quantification in response to the federal Materials Genome Initiative
(http://www.whitehouse.gov/mgi). This initiative strives to reduce the
time for materials discovery, optimization, and deployment through the
promotion of a new R&D paradigm in which computational modeling,
simulation, and analysis will decrease the reliance on time-consuming,
expensive, physical experimentation. Candidates with expertise in one
or more of the following are sought: computational materials science,
atomistic modeling, multiscale modeling, software system development,
uncertainty quantification, statistics, risk analysis. Candidates must
have a Ph.D. (or equivalent research experience) in mathematics,
computer science, or a related field. Appointments at both the junior
and senior levels will be considered. US citizenship is required. NIST
is a Federal measurement science and engineering research laboratory
with locations in Gaithersburg, MD in suburban Washington, DC, and in
Boulder, CO. Interested parties are invited to submit a vita, a statement
of research goals, and the names of three references to Dr. Andrew
Dienstfrey at andrew.dienstfrey@nist.gov. See NIST: http://www.nist.gov/.

Subject: PhD Position, Stochastic ocean modeling, CWI Amsterdam

A PhD position in the research project "Stochastic models for
unresolved scales in geophysical flows" is available at the Centrum
Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

In this project we will develop a new, stochastic methodology for the
representation of subgrid scales in ocean models. The project lies at
the intersection of applied mathematics and ocean modeling, involving
the development of new mathematical ideas on stochastic-deterministic
models for multiscale systems and their application in numerical
models of oceanic flow.

The project will take place in the research group “Computational and
Stochastic Dynamics” at CWI. In this group, stochastic methods for
geophysical fluid dynamics is an expanding research topic.

Please see www.cwi.nl/jobs for further information, including desired
background of candidates and information on how to apply.
