Subject: Paul Noble Swarztrauber, 1936-2011
Dear NA-Digest Readers:
Dr. Paul Swarztrauber passed away in Boulder, Colorado on August 8,
2011. He is known to this digest and also internationally, having
made invited presentations to universities and computing research
centers in several countries. During his 41-year career at the
National Center for Atmospheric Research, he emphasized computer-aided
weather and climate prediction. Math libraries fishpack, fftpack, and
spherepack demonstrate this emphasis, as do his 60+ journal
articles. He worked with numerous scientists and numerical analysts,
and mentored several mathematicians in their early careers. Aside
from these efforts, Paul developed parallel communication algorithms
on various network topologies, particularly for FFTs and transposing
arrays. He holds two US patents on the "Communication Machine", which
orchestrates communication between an unlimited number of processors.
He continued his academic and technical interests until the very end

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
SIAG/Imaging Science Prize
The first award of the SIAG/Imaging Science Prize (SIAG/IS Prize) will
be made by the SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science (SIAG/IS) at the
SIAM Conference on Imaging Science (IS12), to be held May 20-22, 2012,
in Philadelphia, PA.
The SIAG/IS Prize will be awarded to the authors of the best paper, as
determined by the prize committee, on mathematical and computational
aspects of imaging. Imaging is broadly interpreted to include: image
formation, inverse problems in imaging, image processing, image
analysis, image interpretation and understanding, computer graphics,
and visualization.
The award consists of a plaque and certificate containing the award

One or more PhD positions in Computational Mathematics/Numerical
Analysis
The particular project: Nonlinear generation of internal waves in the
deep ocean by tides. The deep ocean circulation arises as a response
to vertical mixing, which is mainly caused by breaking internal
waves. The tides are probably a major source of these waves (internal
waves are created when tidal currents encounter rough topography on
the bottom of the ocean). The goal of the project is to compute the
generation of oceanic internal waves by tidal currents flowing over
rough bottom topography. We will develop an efficient incompressible
flow solver to be able to predict this process. The flow solver will
also be used to study several other important oceanographic phenomena,
for example gravity currents and dense overflows. Computational
mathematics for wave propagation and flow problems will also be
developed.
The student(s) will be member(s) in a new group (Computational Physics
Unit) that develops computational methods for partial differential
equations with applications in physics and mechanics. Expertise and
interest in theory for initial boundary value problems, high order
methods and multi-physics problems is qualifying.

qualified PhD student for the project "Nonlinear eigenproblems for
high-dimensional data analysis" funded by the German Research
Foundation (DFG).
Project overview:
The computation of eigenvectors and eigenvalues in the linear
eigenproblem is well studied and a large portfolio of methods taking
into account different kinds of structure of the corresponding
matrices exists. However, a large number of problems in machine
learning and statistics and other domains can naturally be formulated
as nonlinear eigenproblems. In order to use the rich structure of
nonlinear eigenproblems in applications, similar to the ease of linear
eigenproblems, the goal of this research project is the development of
a general framework for the computation of nonlinear eigenvectors and
the application of this framework for different problems in data
analysis.
We are looking for a motivated student with a master/diploma in
mathematics, computer science or physics. A strong analytic
background as well as programming skills (C/Matlab) are required. In
particular, knowledge in at least one of the following fields is
mandatory: convex optimization, functional analysis, machine
learning/statistics.
The duration of the project will be 3 years with a salary of 75% TV-L
E13. The deadline for application is September 30, 2011.
