Subject: New release of the NOMAD optimization software
NOMAD (Nonsmooth Optimization by Mesh Adaptive Direct Search) is a C++
implementation of the Mesh Adaptive Direct Search algorithm (MADS) designed
for black-box constrained optimization problems. It is a command-line tool
working with stand-alone black-box programs coded in any language, and also
a library callable from another C++ program. NOMAD 3.3 is freely available
under the GPL license at www.gerad.ca/nomad. Pre-compiled versions for
Windows and MacOSX are provided and the source code is available for
compiling on another systems (Unix, Linux, etc.)

Subject: New book, Multilevel Methods
We are glad to announce that our book on Robust Algebraic Multilevel Methods
and Algorithms, Johannes Kraus and Svetozar Margenov, was recently published
by de Gruyter:
http://www.degruyter.de/cont/print/detailEn.cfm?id=IS-9783110193657-1
The monograph deals with algorithms for the solution of linear systems of
algebraic equations with large-scale sparse matrices, with a focus on
problems that are obtained after discretization of partial differential
equations using finite element methods.
The authors provide a comprehensive presentation of the recent advances in
robust algebraic multilevel methods and algorithms including, e.g., the
preconditioned conjugate gradient method, the algebraic multilevel iteration
(AMLI) preconditioners, some relations to the classical algebraic multigrid
(AMG) method and its recent modifications.
The first five chapters can serve as a short introductory course on the theory
of AMLI methods and algorithms. The next part of the monograph is devoted to
more advanced topics, including related issues of AMG methods, AMLI methods
for discontinuous Galerkin systems, locking-free algorithms for coupled
problems etc., ending with important aspects of implementation and one
challenging application. This second part is addressed to some more
experienced students and practitioners and can be used to complete a more
advanced course on robust AMLI methods and their efficient application.

Special Issue on Recent Advances on q-Series: Theory and Applications
Over the past decades, the topic of q-series has been a particularly active
area of research. q-series have numerous applications and play a very
important role in many fields. Recently, the study of q-series has popped up
in such diverse areas as Lie algebras, quantum groups, statistical mechanics,
physics, affine root systems, number theory, combinatorics, orthogonal
polynomials, graphs, elliptic function theory, representation theory, as
applications and connections to these areas have been found. Furthermore, the
theory of q-series has been extensively enriched by the large amount of
activity devoted to q-analogs of the classical special functions.
We invite authors to present their original research articles that will
stimulate the continuing efforts in developing new results in the theory of q-
series. The papers with relevant open problems, as well as review articles on
topics of current research which present the state of the art in the field,
are also welcome.

Linear Algebra and Its Applications
Special Issue on Tensors and Multilinear Algebra
http://multilinear.stanford.edu/laa.html
Submission Deadline: September 30, 2010
Tensors are increasingly ubiquitous in various areas of applied,
computational, and industrial mathematics because multilinear algebra
arises naturally in many contexts. The purpose of this special issue is to
bring together three lines of research -- multilinear algebraic techniques
in multilinear algebra, linear algebraic techniques in multilinear
algebra, and multilinear algebraic techniques in linear algebra. The issue
will attract the attention of mathematicians to challenges and recent
findings in the rapidly developing field of applied and numerical
multilinear algebra. This special issue will be open to all papers with
significant new results where either multilinear algebraic methods play an
important role or new tools and problems of multilinear algebraic nature
are presented. Survey papers that illustrate common themes across
disciplines and application areas, and especially where multilinear
algebraic or tensor techniques play a central role are also welcomed.
Papers must meet the publication standards of Linear Algebra and Its
Applications and will be refereed in the usual way.
Please see http://multilinear.stanford.edu/laa.html for more details,
including a list of potential topics and instructions on submitting
papers.

Subject: Post-Doctoral position in HPC at IFP, France
The Applied Mathematics and Computer Science Department of IFP (French
Petroleum Research Institute) is looking for candidates with a strong
background in scientific computing to join a collaborative project on
the simulation of CO2 geological storage.
CO2 geological storage simulations couple multiphase Darcy flow with
reactive transport to account for the geochemical reactions between the
aqueous phase and the rock at the basin scale. They involve a large
range of spatial and time scales and lead to very large nonlinear and
linear systems coupling a large number of unknowns. The chemical
reactions between the fluid and the rock system, which are solved
locally in each cell using a nonlinear Newton type algorithm, are the
main source of load imbalance for parallel simulation. Dynamic load
balancing techniques are key assets in order to improve the performance
of such simulations on a large number of processors.
The objective of the postdoctoral position is to study in detail the
source of imbalance of the reactive transport numerical model in order
to derive local cost models for the simulation. Then the candidate will
study and implement dynamic load balancing strategies based on the local
cost criteria and run time measurements. The efficiency of the
algorithms will be exhibited using IFP massively parallel cluster on
large real cases (up to 10 millions cells and 20 unknowns per cell). The
implementation will be based on IFP-CEA parallel object oriented
platform Arcane using its dynamic load balancing high level services.
The position will be held at IFP, Rueil Malmaison (close Paris
neighborhood), France. The candidate will join the ANR collaborative
project SHPCO2 involving teams from IFP, INRIA, University Paris XIII,
ENSMSE, and BRGM.
Keywords: parallel computing, multi-phase flow, reactive transport,
C++/MPI programming, Finite volume schemes, dynamic load balancing
algorithms.
Knowledge and skills required :
- High skills and significant experience in scientific computing or high
performance computing
- Very good knowledge of the programming languages : C++, MPI
- Additional skills or abilities that would be appreciated:
- Significant experience of software development and mastery of related
tools (versions manager, compilation, documentation, tests, debugging,…)
-Some background in multiphase flow or reactive transport models
