Fellowship Program is now accepting nominations for its second annual

for submissions is Friday, September 8, 2008..
The ACM/IEEE-CS HPC Ph.D. Fellowship Program honors exceptional Ph.D.
students throughout the world with the focus areas of High Performance
Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis. HPC covers the areas of
computational sciences, computational engineering, and computer
science using the most powerful computers available at a given time.
The ACM/IEEE-CS HPC Ph.D. Fellowship Program also supports the
sponsors' long-standing commitment to workforce diversity and
encourages nominations of women, minorities and all who contribute to
diversity.
ACM/IEEE-CS HPC Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded with a certificate and a
stipend of at least $5,000 (US) for one academic year. All ACM/IEEE-CS
HPC Ph.D. Fellows are invited to attend at least one SC conference
(usually the one after one year of receiving the award). Furthermore,
the SC Steering Committee and other conference volunteers are willing
to facilitate, where possible, internships for Fellows at HPC research
or development sites. Interns are paid by their host site and will be
subject to the prevailing terms and conditions of the internship
program at that site. ACM/IEEE-CS HPC Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded
annually but previous awardees may compete annually to be renewed for
up to two additional years (three total), based on the Award
Recipient's continued exceptional academic standing, progress,
achievement, and sustained interaction with the HPC technical
community. All Fellowship Recipients pursuing an award renewal must be
re-nominated to compete for an award renewal. A maximum of one
nomination per academic department will be considered in addition to
any renewal nominations from that department.
Students must be nominated by a full time faculty member at a PhD
granting institution .
Nominees must be enrolled in a full-time Ph. D program, and they
should have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral
program at the time of their nomination. Fellowship recipients will
be selected based on:
• Their overall potential for research excellence,
• The degree to which their technical interests align with those of
the HPC community,
• Their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and
endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head as well as
a plan of study to enhance HPC related skills
• The demonstration of their current and/or anticipated use of HPC
resources.
All applicants must meet minimum scholarship requirements at the
institution where they are or will be registered.

This edition contains five new chapters to serve two important
purposes: first, to introduce multigrid methods from a
domain-decomposition point of view; and second, to introduce the
semi-algebraic multigrid approach for systems of partial differential
equations (PDEs). The introduction of multigrid methods as
domain-decomposition methods makes the problem area accessible not
only to experienced researchers but also to students and beginners.
The domain-decomposition point of view is not only a pedagogical tool
to help introduce the field, but also an analytical tool to provide
some theoretical background and help develop suitable multigrid
versions. In particular, a multigrid version for the numerical
solution of systems of coupled PDEs is proposed.
Each chapter ends with relevant exercises to help understand the
insight behind the methods introduced. This makes the book suitable
to serve as a text-book in courses in numerical linear algebra,
numerical methods for PDEs, and computational physics in the advanced
undergraduate and graduate levels.
Because the problem area is well introduced, the only prerequisites
are elementary linear algebra and calculus.

Florida State University announces the Department of Scientific
Computing
Florida State University announces the formation of the Department of
Scientific Computing. This is a new, tenure-granting department
within the College of Arts and Sciences. The new department starts
with 16 faculty members drawn from the biological, physical, and
mathematical sciences and engineering. Future hiring of additional
faculty is planned.
The missions of the Department of Scientific Computing are to perform
cutting-edge research in computational science, to address the
pressing need to train the next generation of computational
scientists, and to provide environments for high-performance
computing on the FSU campus. In order to carry its missions, a
diverse group of faculty has been assembled who not only have
excellent, well-developed research programs of their own, but also
interact with other faculty in a synergistic manner so that advances
in computational science can influence advances in several
traditional disciplines. The Department also offers innovative
graduate degree programs that provide genuine interdisciplinary
training in the computational sciences; it also manages several high-
performance computer systems.
The Department of Scientific Computing's predecessor at FSU was the
School of Computational Science; the Department inherits the
successful graduate degree programs in computational science offered
by the School for the last two years. Pending approval, the
Department will begin offering, in Fall 2009, and undergraduate
degree program in computational science.

We are inviting submissions for the 3rd special issue of Computational
Statistics and Data Analysis dealing with Matrix Computations and
Statistics.
A number of interesting and important ideas have resulted from the
relationship between matrix computations and statistics. Well known
examples include the solution of least squares problems, computation
of the singular value decomposition and its generalizations,
estimation of principal components, computation of canonical
correlations, several cluster analysis algorithms, and the solution of
total least squares problems. Applications of matrix computations and
statistics in data mining are welcome.
CSDA aims to have regular issues in Matrix Computations and
Statistics. Two have been published in recent years (41(1) and
50(1)), which can be found at:

computations and a statistics component. Authors who are uncertain

in Mathematics at the Chair of Applied Analysis of the University of
Osnabrück, Germany, starting from 1st November 2008.
The employment will be based on the pool of applicants and their respective
qualifications, either as a PhD fellowship (75 %) or as a postdoc-position
(100%) for a period of three years.
A master degree in mathematics with outstanding grades is expected. There is
the possibility for a doctorate or postdoc lecture qualification respectively.
The position is part of a joint project between the Chair of Applied Analysis,
University of Os-nabrück (G. Kutyniok), the Institut für Geometrie und
Praktische Mathematik, RWTH Aachen (W. Dahmen), and the Seminar for Applied
Mathematics, ETH Zurich (C. Schwab). A central theme of the project will be
the mathematical analysis and the computer implementation of directional
rep-resentation systems in adaptive discretization methods for partial
differential equations.
Good programming skills as well as some background in function spaces and
(applied and compu-tational) harmonic analysis are a must.
