Subject: A poetic apology in pathetic apogee
I tried to come up with a mathematical poem to liven up this
week's NA Digest, but sadly was unable to do so. The math
just didn't work out. Please accept my humble apology:
I'm not a poet laureate,
just a poet overrate.
True poets speak in words that flow ;
all I get is underflow.
True poets write with elegance,
my poetic math gives Inf's.
True literature inspires Man,
my poem over zero's NaN.
This poem's float' IEEE,
critics all cry out "Ai-Eee!"

This is the new textbook for MIT's courses 18.085-6 on Computational
Science and Engineering. The book integrates analysis and algorithms
and codes, to explain each topic as effectively as possible -- it is
"solution-based" instead of "formula-based". This is how we learn.
CSE is a big subject and this book offers more than a single course.
The book is also a reference for the whole community of computational
scientists and engineers. Please look at the contents, and the book.

Elasticity with Mathematica
Andrei Constantinescu

Alexander Korsunsky
University of Oxford
http://www.cambridge.org/9780521842013
This book introduces to the key ideas and principles in the theory of
elasticity with the help of symbolic computation. Differential and
integral operators on vector and tensor fields of displacements, strains
and stresses are considered on a consistent and rigorous basis with
respect to curvilinear orthogonal coordinate systems. As a consequence,
vector and tensor objects can be manipulated readily, and fundamental
concepts can be illustrated and problems solved with ease. The method is
illustrated using a variety of plane and three-dimensional elastic
problems. General theorems, fundamental solutions, displacements and
stress potentials are presented and discussed. The Rayleigh-Ritz method
for obtaining approximate solutions is introduced for elastostatic and
spectral analysis problems. The book contains more than 60 exercises and
solutions in the form of Mathematica notebooks that accompany every
chapter. Once the reader learns and masters the techniques, they can be
applied to a large range of practical and fundamental problems.

"UNEASY RELATIONS" - the poetry of computational mathematics
Uneasy Relations is a short collection of poems by Mike Bartholomew-Biggs
of the University of Hertfordshire. The poems play with ideas from
numerical analysis - but non-specialists may choose to murmur them as
zen-like meditations. The poems do not confine themselves narrowly to
mathematical themes, however, but touch upon myth and fable, astronomy, the
arts of prediction and preventive maintenance, entomology, hill-walking,
financial portfolio theory and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. There is also
a hint of sexual politics.
