Subject: Wilkinson Fellow in Scientific Computing

I am delighted to announce that Jaydeep Bardhan will
be the next Wilkinson Fellow on Scientific Computing.

Jaydeep was the #1 choice among a list of extremely
qualified applicants for the Wilkinson Fellowship. He
was praised by the innovative aspects of his research,
and by his ability to give crystal-clear presentations.
The committee was also impressed by the highly
multi-disciplinary aspects of his work.

Jaydeep is a graduate of MIT, with a PhD in Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science. His work on "Molecular
Analysis and Design" is an important contribution to an
area of significant scientific interest.

Jay is currently the holder of a DOE Computational
Science Graduate Fellowship.

Subject: The Digest

Colleagues,

The Digest is getting to be a little dull. Note, this last week contains a
bunch of msgs by publishers and a few job openings. How about some
exciting news! Or let's have a bit of controversy. At any rate, we don't
want to see the Digest to degenerate into an outlet for commercial
announcements. Any suggestions?

Is there a person or institution that would like to have some or all of my
back issues of ACM Computing Surveys, SIAM Review, SIAM J Numer Anal, SIAM J

San Clemente, CA? I have not inventoried them in detail but if all were put

Subject: TACC releases GotoBLAS software

TACC releases GotoBLAS software

AUSTIN, Texas, April 12, 2006-The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC)
at The University of Texas at Austin today announced it has released
software for industry, academia and the scientific community that helps
supercomputers run more efficiently.

The software, named GotoBLAS, contains routines that provide standard
building blocks for performing basic vector and matrix operations. These
microkernel implementations are highly optimized for individual
architectures and the GotoBLAS library provides extremely efficient
implementations that can be used in the development of high quality
scientific software.

The software library speeds up a key linear algebra component frequently
used during the supercomputing process and has been used to greatly
increase the performance of a variety of scientific applications. It has
increased the speed of some applications by as much as 50 percent.

The technology is available to commercial users for a licensing fee. A
portion of proceeds from commercial licenses will be reinvested in
future development of the software. TACC also is offering licenses at no
charge and will make the source code available to accelerate development
to the academic and scientific communities.

Goto's development approach is to focus on writing the critical
mathematical operations in assembly language to extract the highest
floating-point performance possible. This process requires intimate
knowledge of the underlying processor architectures. Because Goto's
programs can more efficiently solve complex linear equations, they can
offer decreased solution times to a range of computational science and
engineering problems. The software is generally applicable to any
scientific computing discipline which requires BLAS and the need for
highly-optimized libraries is paramount for achieving high performance
on modern microprocessors.

The software is designed for all levels of chipset architecture
including the Power 4, Power 5, Opteron, Blue Gene/L architectures, the
Pentium 4/Xeon (32bit and 64bit), and Itanium 2 architectures.

To download a copy of GotoBLAS for academic, research, or personal use,
please visit http://www.tacc.utexas.edu/resources/software/. For
additional information on how to obtain a commercial license, please
contact: software@otc.utexas.edu.

Aims
====
The journal aims to serve an interdisciplinary community which
needs to use mathematical techniques in the development of
computational analysis and engineering methodology, in order to
better solve real life problems in areas including engineerng,
science, noise, vibration, energy, business and finance, etc.
It also aims to bridge the subject areas of mathematics, classical
computer science, engineering, and future generation computational
analysis.

Scope
=====
The journal is fundamentally different from many journals of
numerical analysis, computational analysis, and algorithms.
The acceptance of papers is judged on the use of mathematical
techniques and/or engineering methodology in the computational
analysis, and in the engineering of the solutions and simulations
of complex industrial and real life systems.

Articles describing carefully tested computational techniques,
including post-processing visualisation, for real life systems
are welcome on the basis of the above criteria.

Articles dealing with mathematical models, computational analysis,
and computational processes, must be driven by applications with
industrial and real life relevance and are judged on the basis of
the above criteria.

Longer papers which survey recent progress in the field of
computational technology and algorithms are also published.

Articles dealing with numerical analysis or mathematical analysis
alone will not be accepted.

The journal will be published quarterly. The first issue will
appear in Spring 2007.
