Subject: New Book on Partial Differential Equations Software
New from CRC Press:
Ordinary and Partial Differential Equation Routines in
C, C++, Fortran, Java, Maple and MATLAB by H. J. Lee and
W. E. Schiesser
This book provides a set of library ODE/PDE integration
routines written in six widely accepted and used languages.
The ODE integrators are based on embedded Runge Kutta (RK)
pairs, and include the RK pairs in the ode23 and ode45 Matlab
integrators.
The discussion of ODE integration includes truncation error
monitoring and control, h and p refinement, stability and
stiffness, and explicit and implicit algorithms. Stiff
systems are discussed and illustrated through an ODE
application.
The extension to PDEs is by the method of lines (MOL) with
finite difference approximation of the spatial (boundary
value) derivatives. Example PDE applications include an
analysis of the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.
The book should be of interest to applied mathematicians,
scientists and engineers interested in computing solutions
to ODE/PDE systems. The source code for all of the library
routines is available from the authors to facilitate use,
modification and extension to new problems; see
http://www.lehigh.edu/~wes1/wes1.html
for information about the source code.

Subject: Conference in Bordeaux on Fractional Differentiation
The First IFAC workshop on
Fractional differentiation and its applications (FDA 04)
will be held on July 19th and 20th, 2004, at the ENSEIRB Engineering School,
Bordeaux, France.
In the last two decades, fractional differentiation (fractional calculus) has
played a very important role in various fields such as mechanics, control
theory, robotic and image and signal processing. In this last field, some
important considerations such as modeling, curve fitting, filtering, pattern
recognition, edge detection, systems identification, stability,
controllability, observability and robustness are now linked to long-range
dependence phenomena.
Fractional differentiation and its applications in the modeling of mechanical
systems, in automatic control and in signal and image processing is thus now
an important issue for the international scientific community.
This workshop thus aims at gathering the experts in the field of fractional
differentiation and its applications, and all interested researchers, coming
from universities and industries, in order to make the point on the state of
the art and on current research lines in theory, methodology, applications and
tools, including numerical algorithms.

Subject: Workshop in Germany on Fluid Multiphase Systems
WORKSHOP Announcement
TRANSPORT IN FLUID MULTIPHASE SYSTEMS: FROM EXPERIMENTAL DATA TO MECHANISTIC
MODELS
Collaborative Research Center 540, RWTH Aachen, Germany
29-30 March, 2004
FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
BACKGROUND
The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 540 "Model-based Experimental Analysis
of Kinetic Phenomena in Fluid Multi-phase Reactive Systems" is a
multidisciplinary initiative of eleven research groups at RWTH Aachen and FZ
Juelich. It is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) since 1999.
Our goal is to develop a work process which allows the robust and efficient
improvement of our physical understanding leading to predictive mathematical
models. This work process integrates methods which have been studied separately
in the majority of cases, namely:
* development of experimental setup and measurement techniques,
* design of experiments with high information content,
* development of hypotheses and model structures, as well as
* data analysis and model structure adaption.
Within our work process high-resolution measurement techniques, numerical
simulation on different scales, as well as model-based methods for experimental
design and data analysis are employed. The development is performed by the
analysis of a number of challenging modeling problems. A detailed presentation
of our work can be found on our website:
www.sfb540.rwth-aachen.de.
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP
The workshop will be held from March 29 to March 30, 2004 at RWTH Aachen
University, Aachen, Germany. The topics of the workshop will be:
* mass transfer in liquid mixtures and gel matrices,
* transport phenomena in single liquid drops and films,
* measurement techniques,
* modeling on different scales,
* inverse problems.
Invited talks from experts in these fields will be given as well as from CRC
540. The workshop is intended to bring researchers from the different areas
together. Since the range of topics is large the talks are intended to give an
overview rather than technical details.
The workshop will further offer a poster session which will be open for external
contributions.
SPEAKERS
The following invited speakers have already confirmed their participation of
the workshop:
* S.V. Alekseenko, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia - transport
in liquid films

Subject: Special Issue of TCS on Real Numbers and Computers
THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE
Special issue: Real Numbers and Computers
Guest editors: Marc Daumas and Nathalie Revol.
IMPORTANT DATES (tentative planning):
- Deadline for submissions of manuscripts: January 5th, 2004
(full papers only; extended abstracts will be rejected)
- Notification of acceptance/rejection: April, 2004
- Deadline for reception of final papers: July, 2004
- Parution: beginning of 2005
Efficient manipulation of real numbers in computers is still a
challenge. Many interesting theoretical and algorithmic problems are
linked with that topic and belong to quite distant fields such as
computer science, number theory, numerical analysis, computer algebra
and logics. A number of TCS special issues on real numbers and
computers has previously appeared (162 (1), 210(1), 279 (1-2) and 291
(2)), as follow-up to the RNC meetings on these topics. The last
meeting was RNC5 which took place in Lyon in September 2004, cf:
http://www.ens-lyon.fr/LIP/Arenaire/RNC5/
However, this call for papers is open to authors who did not attend RNC5.
TOPICS
Scientists working on questions related to real computer arithmetic
are encouraged to present the theoretical or algorithmic aspects of
their results, even if they did not attend the RNC5 conference. Survey
and tutorial articles may be suitable if clearly identified as
such. Topics include (but are not restricted to) the following list:
- any computational number system
- implemented by a software package or in hardware,
- floating and fixed point,
- serial, on line arithmetic,
- continued fractions,
- exact computations,
- multiple precision,
- interval and stochastic arithmetics.
HOW TO SUBMIT
The submission should contain a scholarly exposition of ideas,
techniques, and results, including motivation and a clear comparison
with related work. More details may be given in an appendix. Authors
may submit additional background reference material that is not widely
available. Submissions must not substantially duplicate work
published or submitted for publication elsewhere.
Prepare a PostScript or PDF version of your full 10-20 pages paper
preferably using Elsevier latex style
http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/latex
The file should either be uploaded to the special issue Internet site
(see url below) or be sent by e-mail to Nathalie.Revol@ens-lyon.fr
and Marc.Daumas@ens-lyon.fr before January 5th. Please find upload site
and additional information at
http://www.ens-lyon.fr/LIP/Arenaire/RNC5/TCS
Make sure that your PostScript or PDF file can be printed on a
standard laser printer. Another possible check is to view it by
Ghostscript.
Language: English.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2004!
