Numerical Solution of Nonlinear Elliptic
Problems via Preconditioning Operators

CONTENT SUMMARY
This monograph is devoted to the numerical solution of nonlinear elliptic
problems. It summarizes a particular efficient framework, for which the
authors go through from the theoretical basis to algorithms for model
problems. Therefore the book is not only intended for researchers in
numerical analysis but for all those practitioners involved in any step of
the process from the mathematical modelling to computer realization for
real-life problems.
The framework of preconditioning operators means that the proposed
preconditioning matrices are the discretizations of suitable linear
elliptic operators. In other words, the preconditioner is the projection
of a preconditioning operator from the Sobolev space into the same
discretization subspace as was used for the original nonlinear problem.
This means that the preconditioning operator can be chosen for the
boundary value problem itself on the continuous level, before
discretization is executed. In this way the properties of the original
problem can be exploited more directly.
The advantages of the preconditioning operator idea appear in both areas
that are involved in the requirements of efficient preconditioners. First,
since the auxiliary systems are discretizations of suitable linear
elliptic operators, their solution relies on a highly developed background
including multigrid type algorithms and fast direct methods. Second, the
conditioning properties of the underlying operators give a mesh
independent asymptotic bound for those of the discretized problems.
The main types of iterative methods are surveyed in the book involving
various realizations of preconditioning operators. Several real-life
applications are mentioned, such as elasto-plasticity, magnetic potential
(nonlinear Maxwell equations) and flow problems, to which the discussion
in the book is suited. Numerical algorithms and computer realizations are
also included.

The principal venue is the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, located
in Darling Harbour and adjacent to the central business district of Sydney.
We plan to attract 2000 delegates.
Currently we have approximately 1979 abstracts promised, including abstracts
for 282 minisymposia and 853 abstracts for contributed talks/posters.
Currently we have approximately 1350 registrations. Our data indicates that

The abstract submission facility has closed for all but embedded meetings,
posters and abstracts for talks within accepted minisymposia.
Registration deadlines
The 'Regular' registration fee deadline is 31 March 2003. There is a very
nice prize for delegates who register and pay before that time. After the
end of March, there is the possibility of 'Late' registration.

Computational Engineering is being interpreted broadly, including
computation (theory and/or practice) associated with modeling,
simulation, design, optimization, control, and visualization of
engineering systems. It includes modeling and simulation of physical
phenomena and product behavior (Engineering Science); and modeling
and design of complex systems to achieve maximum operational

Subject: Postdoctoral Position at INRIA
Applications are invited for a one-year postdoctoral position at INRIA
Sophia Antipolis in the field of Computational ElectroMagnetism (CEM).
Electromagnetics and wave propagation play a increasing role in
industrial and domestic contexts (electromagnetic and acoustic
pollutions, etc...). Numerical simulation is usually done in the
frequency domain or in the time domain.
The Caiman team at INRIA Sophia Antipolis:
http://www.inria.fr/recherche/equipes/caiman.en.html
has been dealing with wave propagation (mainly electromagnetics) for
some years now, mainly in the time domain. Recently some promising
Computational Fluid Dynamics inspired explicit finite volume methods
(FVTD) on unstructured grids, have been proposed by the team. At the
same time, the team has also developed a high-level simulation
software of CEM in the frequency domain by integral equations. Future
research activities will be concerned with the coupling of volumic and
surfacic approaches in the time domain as well as in the frequency
domain.
This link is not the subject of this postdoctoral study, which will be
a first step in that direction. More precisely, the objectives here
are:
- to study implicit time integragtion schemes for the existing FVTD
method on unstructured grids, allowing the use of large time steps
(useful for locally refined meshes);
- to study factorization and resolution algorithms for the resulting
algebraic systems (since the focus is on linear electromagnetics,
assembled matrices are constant during the simulation, if the time
step is held constant); there is here a natural link with the studies
in the frequency domain.
Many applications of such a study are possible, for example,
electromagnetic compatibility of small but far systems~: cellular
phones in an airplane, electromagnetic waves in a human brain (with
possible heterogeneous, anistropic materials).
The candidate is expected to have or receive shortly a PhD in
mathematics or applied mathematics with a strong background in the
numerical solution of partial differential equations. Experiences in
paralle computing would be an asset.
Application file:
- a detailed scientific program written by the candidate,
- a curriculum vitae,
- a letter of candidature which includes employment prospects
following the post-doctoral period at INRIA,
- a copy of (or a pointer to en electronic version of) the doctoral
dissertation,
- if possible, doctoral committee reports and one to three,
letters of recommendation,
To be sent by April 14th to:
